The Canadian government stresses the importance of family and its citizens’ happiness; one of the ways it demonstrates this is by uniting families through their Family Class Sponsorship Program. Canada’s family reunification program is a staple in the Canadian Immigration system, however, the process shouldn’t be taken lightly and can even be seen as competitive.

An individual can sponsor certain relatives to come to Canada if they’re at least 18 years of age and meet one of the following:

  • Are a Canadian citizen
  • Are a person registered in Canada as an Indian under the Canadian Indian Act
  • Are a permanent resident of Canada

Two-Step process

  • The sponsor must submit their sponsorship application. This application must be initiated by the sponsor. Sponsor’s eligibility will be assessed and after getting approval through a separate application, an individual can become a sponsor.
  • The foreign national must submit their application for permanent residency. Foreign national initiate this application who want to come to Canada as a permanent resident. The foreign national needs to meet certain requirements to qualify under the family class program.
